This article presents findings from Caribou and Qhala’s research on the platformization of livelihoods for young people in Kenya, particularly the barriers women face in the context of shifting labor dynamics. It explores three key findings: tensions between empowerment and social norms, the myth of flexibility, and balancing online work with domestic obligations. Interviews with young women show that, in the context of platform livelihoods, empowerment is complex and deeply influenced by social norms playing out online.
