Strengthening Young Africa’s AI Skills | Photobook

Artificial intelligence is reshaping work and learning across Africa.

The rapid spread and increasing uptake of AI across sectors, from agriculture and education to healthcare and micro-enterprises, presents an emerging AI skilling challenge. African youth are motivated to use AI but face several barriers.

This report, Strengthening Young Africa’s AI Skills, created in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, draws on an extensive literature review, expert interviews, and conversations with more than 300 young people across seven African countries. Key takeaways show what inclusive, future-ready skilling means for African youth.

1. Youth see AI adoption as a necessity, not an option.

African youth are adopting AI tools as a necessity for economic and academic survival. This high demand persists despite severe structural barriers like high data costs and poor connectivity.

Learning AI is a matter of survival. For anything I want to do, I use my AI. I use it almost every day of my life now.

    2. Generative AI dominates, with ChatGPT as the gateway.

    For many young Africans, ChatGPT is synonymous with AI. ChatGPT’s success is due to its immediate utility, mobile-friendliness, and free entry point. However, this leads to a narrow view where useful, tailor-made, sector-specific AI applications are largely invisible.

    I use ChatGPT not just for quick answers, but as a sounding board—to structure my writing, explore opposing arguments, or practice for interviews.

    I use ChatGPT, each and every pleasant day of my life. I don’t know what I can do without ChatGPT. Because of my line of work, I have to be constantly updated on what is going on in the duty space and how I can improve.       3. Structural barriers—especially cost—persist.

      Deeper engagement with AI is blocked by structural barriers: costs, lack of confidence, and lack of formal skilling pathways. These systematically exclude the most vulnerable.

      The main barriers are the cost of premium tools, unreliable internet, and the absence of AI customised to Ghanaian contexts, especially in sectors like farming and education.

      The cost of a smartphone is too high for a beginner to acquire. So, I think not owning a smartphone is the main challenge.

        4. Fix the basics first.

        AI skilling requires basics first. Many youth lack reliable power, affordable internet, devices, and foundational digital literacy. Without these, advanced AI training will fail—especially for rural populations.

        For me to build a strong foundation in AI, I need to learn basic concepts that can help me to understand it and how it works, then I will understand its full potential.

          5. Learning is transactional.

          The primary driver for youth engaging with AI is monetization: learning is viewed as a direct transaction aimed at increasing income or employability. They seek immediately applicable practical skills like digital marketing, content creation, and business automation. Curricula should be redesigned around these monetizable, project-based skills.

          The day you die is the day you stop learning. I’m always learning new skills because what makes people different financially is what they know. While many videographers are still transferring footage, I’ve finished and sent the job to the client. With AI skills that I am learning … I can charge ₦150,000 instead of ₦40,000 and deliver in 15 minutes.

          Some of these tools are not known, or the relevance is not seen. Some are paid. So, unless you have seen a clear link to your career goal, you won’t bother using it.

          With regards to mastering the use of farming-specific AI, I mainly think about earning more money. I believe that using farming AI will help me increase my income, and I can use that money to support my parents and family.

            6. Youth are bypassing formal education to learn about AI.

            Young Africans are actively bypassing traditional institutions and learning delivered via social media, mobile technology, and peer networks. They prefer online platforms and short, practical video tutorials on YouTube and TikTok. Friends and peers are primary initial learning sources.

            My journey with AI started in 2020 when a YouTube video sparked my curiosity, leading me to complete a free six-month Google/Udacity course in Python and machine learning.

            I first encountered AI through TikTok reels showing some people’s creative abilities. I now actively learn through online platforms like TikTok and farming groups on Facebook.

            Some of my friends started using AI before me. They introduced me to these tools. After that, I installed the applications and continued using them. Now, I can even teach others how to use them—how to input questions into AI and receive answers. … I believe that anyone can find a platform that can teach them about AI or digital technology online as long as they are interested. Alternatively, they can ask friends about AI, who can provide information—like what I did. After getting some information from friends, they can proceed to expand their knowledge by using search engines.

              7. Augment, don’t just automate.

              To navigate the labor market shift, employers and trainers should adopt AI that augments, rather than just automates, human roles. Skilling should prioritize uniquely human competencies—care, ethics, judgment, and social skills—that are relatively resilient to automation.

              AI has had a minimal impact on the data annotation sector, as human input is still crucial for training AI models and handling “edge scenarios,” despite disruptions in other sectors… as the primary role of BPO operators in this space involves training AI models rather than using AI directly in their day-to-day operations. For the call center side, BPO in the call center, yes, there’s been some disruption.

              8. Formalize peer support

              Youth are relying on informal support (friends, peers, family), indicating a severe mentorship gap. Some report having no formal support at all.

              My adoption of AI began through family. A niece introduced me to Meta AI on WhatsApp, which quickly became my go-to for health tips, product specs, and price comparisons.

              Given how closely people interact with technology, it would be beneficial for community role models to actively discuss AI and demonstrate its practical applications. If individuals could observe these models engaging with AI in real-life situations, it could help bridge the gap between awareness and effective use.

                9. Prioritize equity, not just access.

                Inclusion, equity, and localization are not optional; they determine impact. AI benefits risk accruing only to the privileged unless programs deliberately address gender, disability, urban-rural divides, and cultural relevance by supporting localized delivery and content in local languages.

                My learning pathway for AI is a mix of self-teaching and peer support. I often experiment with my phone. I also apply for training opportunities, including recent disability-focused sponsorship programs.
