This article explores how satellite Earth Observation (EO) is helping bridge critical data gaps in urban sustainability projects across the developing world. The European Space Agency’s Global Development Assistance (GDA) Urban initiative partners with major financial institutions like the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, and African Development Bank to support urban planning with timely, detailed EO data. The article highlights eight urban projects benefiting from innovative EO solutions, ranging from slum monitoring to green city planning, and discusses how EO data is being combined with other data sources to inform better decision-making and drive sustainable urban development where traditional data collection is challenging.
