Over the course of 2021, Caribou, in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, undertook a study to investigate the experiences of young women earning livelihoods on digital platforms in Ghana, Kenya, and Nigeria. Interviews with women platform workers revealed insights about their experiences and challenges, culminating in a better understanding of how platforms might best contribute to women’s livelihoods.

This report, written with Value for Women, builds on this qualitative research and provides an overview of an exploration of gender-forward business practices for digital platforms and an innovative Gender Lens Survey that was adapted and piloted to assess the performance of digital platforms in a scalable, accessible, and engaging way. The study asks:

  • What do gender-forward business practices look like for digital platforms?
  • How can these practices be meaningfully assessed?
  • How are individual platforms implementing such practices?
