This article describes the creation and launch of the interactive online tool Cosmopolis, created by Caribou Space. Cosmopolis is a virtual world where users can explore and inquire about Earth Observation (EO) through conversations with a virtual satellite EO guide, Dr. Isla Campbell, and representatives of the government of Cosmopolis. Visitors to the city can ask questions in their own words and can receive answers to their questions in non-technical language with case study examples from GDA Urban Sustainability activities.
The European Space Agency’s Global Development Assistance program (GDA) is a global partnership to mainstream the use of EO into development operations. GDA supports the European EO industry to develop products that use EO data to solve a wide range of sustainable development challenges. In partnership with international financial institutions such as the World Bank and Asian Development Bank, GDA develops the best technology from European industry adoption into development operations and designs it for use by national government agencies all over the world.
