Satellite technologies have a wide range of applications in humanitarian emergencies, including in disaster risk management, conflict and security contexts, food insecurity and famine, health emergencies, and population displacements. However, research conducted by Caribou in 2021 suggested that the uptake of these technologies is still low in the humanitarian sector, and many barriers remain.
Following a series of collaborative ideation workshops held with members of the humanitarian sector, the UK Humanitarian Innovation Hub supported Caribou to initiate three complementary system-level developments to address stubborn challenges and barriers to uptake in the use of geospatial information for humanitarian decision-making.
Caribou launched two new tools designed for humanitarians with limited to no technical background:
- The GeoEvidence Explorer consolidates impact literature and insights from past use of geospatial information in humanitarian operations.
- The GeoPlatform Finder, an interactive web-based knowledge repository, supports humanitarians to find relevant geospatial platforms that could be used to improve their preparedness for—and response to—flooding and drought events.
