Digital platforms are reshaping how people find and do work. For gig workers, small enterprises and farmers, platforms create new ways to reach customers. But platforms are more traditional marketplaces—they introduce new roles, challenges, and opportunities for those who rely on them to earn a living.
Since 2020, Caribou has been researching what we call platform livelihoods—documenting the experiences of individuals and enterprises working, trading, renting, and creating in the digital economy.
This research is published in individual reports that can be found under the tag Platform Livelihoods & Economies. In 2023, Caribou released a book of the same title, bringing together key insights from our work. The book is accompanied by a podcast further exploring insights from this project.
Much of this research has been made possible through support and partnership of the Mastercard Foundation and the Gates Foundation. Caribou is deeply grateful for the contributions of dozens of individual researchers and a network of institutional partners, including Qhala, Story Ă— Design, University of Ghana, Lagos Business School, Value for Women, Kilimo Source, Habitus Insight, Learn.ink, and RISE Indonesia.
