Forests are vital carbon sinks and habitats, but they face threats from deforestation, biodiversity loss, and community displacement due to agricultural expansion. Earth Observation (EO) offers a cost-effective, global, and accurate solution for monitoring these forests, which is essential for sustainable forestry management, climate change mitigation, and protecting forest-dependent livelihoods.
European Space Agency’s Global Development Assistance Forest Management aims to mainstream the use of satellite EO in forest management. The consortium, created in partnership with the World Bank and Asian Development Bank, includes governments in ~10 countries. The project focused on topics such as carbon accounting, mangrove and wildlife conservation, and sustainable forestry.
Caribou supports user requirements gathering—understanding and communicating the ways EO can inform programs and decision-making related to forest management—and leads on the communication of the consortium’s activities through brochures, flyers, blogs, social media, videos, and interactive communications tools.
