Earth Observation for Sustainable Development: Forest Management

With the support of

Forests are vital carbon sinks and habitats, but they face threats from deforestation, biodiversity loss, and community displacement due to agricultural expansion. Earth Observation (EO) offers a cost-effective, global, and accurate solution for monitoring these forests, which is essential for sustainable forestry management, climate change mitigation, and protecting forest-dependent livelihoods.

Earth Observation for Sustainable Development (EO4SD) was an initiative by the European Space Agency to increasing the use of EO in development within international financial institutions and the countries in which they work. EO4SD Forest Management, the precursor to GDA Forest Management, aimed to provide EO data in support of forest development programs. Partners included with the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, and governments in 11 countries. The project focused on topics such as UN REDD+, sustainable forest management, coastal ecosystems and mangroves, and forest restoration.

Caribou had a broad role, providing an impact evaluation, strategic advisory, and communications support, including brochures, flyers, blogs, videos, and interactive communications tools.
