In 2024, with the support of Canada’s International Development Research Centre, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office of the United Kingdom, and AI4D Africa, Caribou documented promising use cases of responsible artificial intelligence (AI) in international development.
Drawing on interviews with leaders across eight organizations in health, education, agriculture, and human rights, the report and accompanying videos explore both the emerging practices of AI for Development and the approaches organizations are using to assess and document impact. Conversations with these organizations illustrate how they ensure responsible AI engagement, including: do no harm (go slowly), keep humans in the loop, pursue fairness for all, and share with the community of practice.
We observed three types of impact: increasing scale and efficiency, improving outcomes, and strengthening the community of practice. While it is still early to document the impact of generative AI in the sector, these cases highlight the importance of sharing best practices, and investing time and resources into meaningful impact assessment.
